Gerry CallahanYou either love him or you hate him.

These days Gerry Callahan is perhaps best known for his biting political commentary on the Dennis and Callahan morning show on WEEI, but it’s easy to forget that at one time, he was perhaps one of the best sports writers in the country.

Callahan grew up in Massachusetts, graduating from Chelmsford High School and UMass Amherst. He started his career with the Lowell Sun in 1983 and then moved on to the Boston Herald five years later. In 1994, he moved on to Sports Illustrated, where was a senior writer for the publication.

He was a frequent Big Show co-host in the early days of the program, before getting his own show with John Dennis starting in 1997. After leaving SI, he rejoined the Herald as a columnist.

The D&C program has garnered its share of attention, and not all of it positive. In 2007, Callahan missed several months of work on the show with a throat ailment. By the time he was healthy enough to return, his contract as well as that of co-host Dennis was up for renewal, which resulted in a brief lockout for the pair which had them returning in time for the first “Patriots Monday” of the 2007 season on September 10th.

  1. He gets a hearty disapprove from me based solely on the fact that he was responsible for bringing that jerkoff Meterparel here. Just for that someone should shove a pink flamingo up his ass.

  2. His picture is next to the definition for, ‘Sports Media Hack.’ Ever since the ‘walk-on-the-beach’ episode happened and Mr. Hospital Clown and Mr. Rodeo Clown came groveling back to WEEI, I knew then that they were limp-wristed pansies. It’s difficult to determine who is worse…Rodeo or Circus. But I’m happy to come here and give my two-cents worth.

  3. If you’re giving your ratings based on just sports, then Callahan is an approve. I also believe if you removed John Dennis from the equation Gerry would be even better. JD’s swarmy setups really kill the flow of the show. His ratings will take a substantial hit due to his Limbaugh/Hannity impression each morning but the fact of the matter is the guy knows his sports, and besides sucking Schilling and Doc’s ass he really pulls no punches.

  4. Just about the worst EEI has to offer and that’s really saying something.

A close-minded conservative who spews nothing but bile and hatred for anything that looks or acts different than he does. I know some people that grew up with him in Chelmsford and he’s at least been a consistently smug dirtbag his entire life.

Single handedly blew a state championship in football by committing an unecessary clipping call. He’s about the only type of guy I know that should be reminded of that on a daily basis.

    A truly worthless human being.

    DISAPPROVE!!!

    1. Way to throw labels around like a typical liberal moron. Anybody who disagrees with a left-wing agenda is labeled a racist and a hater – give me a break. You and your left-wing buddies are the ones spewing nothing but bile and hatred for anyone who disagrees with you.

      1. I’m not a liberal (voted for Bush twice) but do find that Callahan is as arrogant as they come. His delivery obviously has great marketability, but how on earth does he feel justified in being so hateful to so many people? His political approach fuels the fire of negativity and turns off more open-minded thinkers. Of course, he doesn’t seem to care as long as the market pays him for his hateful opinions. Also, although he is an informed sports authority, he carries his negativity to that realm as well. Not everyone can always be an all-star, yet Callahan seems to overly enjoy pointing out those who are not at the top of their game.

  5. …..OVERRATED BLOWHARD…..the entire D&C show is a 4 hour Bitching session…Even after a huge win by ANY of the local teams you can count on them to pick out the “negative” and harp on it for 4 hours….They make sports about as much fun as a root canal……DISAPPROVE!….and by the way, I rather they talk politics, it’s when they talk sports that pisses me off

He’s the tapeworm in the lower intestine of the Boston Sports Scene.

Born on home plate and struck out swinging but the catcher dropped strike three, got to second on a passed ball, then moved to third on a balk, thinks he hit a triple. I will give him credit for not loafing down the first base line after the swinging strike.

  9. His tough guy, right-wing zealot shtick has become quite stale. Fashions himself as sports radio’s answer to Rush, however, he doesn’t have the intellectual capital to back up his incendiary, half-cocked opinions. His only answer to opposing viewpoints is to either talk-over or hang-up on the callers.

He possesses the worst combination of traits: 1) He’s an ignoramus 2) He believes he’s the smartest, toughest bloke in the room. Put these two together and you have yourself a colossal jack-ass.

    1. Sadly, when you put those two together you also typically wind up with a successful radio talkshow host.

  10. D&C, also known as dilation and curettage, is a surgical procedure often performed after a first trimester miscarriage. Dilation means to open up the cervix; curettage means to remove the contents of the uterus. Curettage may be performed by scraping the uterine wall with a curette instrument or by a suction curettage (also called vacuum aspiration), using a vacuum-type instrument.

  11. Callahan’s a very good sports writer.

On the radio, he leaves much to be desired, so it’s ironic that his main source of income now is from his radio gig.

I really can’t stand the D&C show. Neither one of them does a very good job on the radio if you ask me.

I don’t get the constant bashing of the Pats that’s been taking place on that show since Spygate broke. If it’s just to counter the Big Show rumpswabs, then I guess it makes sense. But then again, I’d appreciate some HONEST opinions once in awhile, rather than the contrived ones that we always seem to get from those guys (heck, from almost everyone on WEEI).

When Callahan talks politics, it’s painful to me, because as a conservative myself I think I could make the arguments for “our” side a heck of a lot more eloquently than GC does–and without the snarkiness.

When he sticks to sports, he’s pretty good, and like I said, he’s a very good writer and his columns in the Herald are still worth reading.

Still, I just can’t get past the contrived Belichick/Pats bashing (except for the obligatory Brady ballwashing that goes on when they do their weekly spot with him during the season).

    Mild Disapprove.

  12. I don’t always agree with him and have to turn DNC off sometimes because of him but overall I think he adds more to the sports landscape than detracts. I know I certainly missed DNC when they were locked out which results in my approve vote. As an aside, the nature of this site being a media watch tends to attract people who have disagreements with media members from what I’ve seen throughout posts and seeing so many approval ratings ending up on the negative side of the ledger.

  13. Yet another example of a Boston sports media figure who at one time was actually very good, but have become bloated caricatures of themselves with increased exposure and success. Callahan was/is a more than capable and thought-provoking writer and his early forays into sports talk radio were fine. But, that was then. His “mentoring” of Metergerbil and foistering that specimen on this market alone are grounds for a disapprove.

  15. Disapprove, but not vehemently so. He’s acceptable as a sports writer, but too often reverts to tired cliches (like complainig that JD Drew selfishly walked – in his first AB in the first inning of the first game in 2007) to be any more than average.

It’s his political nonsense that kills it for me. I lean right, and therefore agree with him more than I disagree with him, albeit barely. My problem, however, is that he cannot debate without insulting the other person or shouting them down. Even on things that I do agree with him completely on I find myself embarrassed to do so.

Since I got XM for Christmas I’ve had no reason whatsoever to listen to him, so my hatred for him has subsided quite a bit, thankfully.

As a result, I became less inclined towards listening to WEEI at all (I was a drive time listener, and between Callahan and that grade-A moron Smerlas I wanted to drive into oncoming traffic). Now, I’m blissfully ‘EEI free.

For all the “ratings” these idiots supposedly get, I know for a fact that most of the people I know simply don’t listen to ‘EEI in the morning anymore. DISAPPROVE as strongly as possible.

The only reason he’s #1 in the ratings (and someone needs to remind him of this) is because Stern went to Satellite radio. Period.

    Actually thinks Meterperrel is funny/talented/insightful.

Likes to tell everyone what’s “interesting” and “compelling” to him.

WAAAAH (Artie Lange style) the NBA Finals games are on to late WAAAH. Gerry, if it’s on to late you and your life partner should give up your lucrative radio careers and go back to sleep you whiney little biotch.

I’ve got a feeling that if Gerry’s pickup basketball buddies ended up playing Bill Pinkberry’s basketball buddies someone would break a nail or a heel.

Kept referring to David Stern as, “money grubbing” repeatedly this morning.

Stole the “dump line” from Ordway (who stole it from Howie Carr). Stole reading the headlines from Howard Stern (at least Howard’s funny when they read ’em or Dracula Gottfried makes an appearance).

  27. Strong Approval. I like D&C and particularly Gerry Callahan.

I like the fact that they mix in political/current events talk with sports..it keeps things fresh, instead of talking about the Red Sox and Patriots day after day.

I like the fact that Gerry isn’t a homer like the Big Show guys…both Gerry and John will criticize the Boston sports teams and aren’t afraid to disagree or call out the coaches/players/announcers, etc of the Boston sports teams.
Gerry does come across as arrogant sometimes…but most talk show personalities do. He’s not nearly as arrogant as other personalities.

D&C is so much better of a show than the Big Show and other WEEI programs because they mix in political and current events talk with sports, they aren’t unabashed homers like Ordway and the many others at EEI, and because the has way more variety than the other shows.

There have been a few occasions, when the Pats or Sox we’re the hot topic, and thy’re talking politics…unbelievable (and delusional)!

I do have one new item to add to the record here. I long ago got tired of listening to D&C getting their rocks off by calling the dregs of society various names. I guess we’re supposed to say “hey, these guys REALLY hate child molesters and murderers, I want them on MY side!!”And really, they give you the sense that they get some kind of perverse pleasure using the words “scumbag” and “low life” – you’d think there was a circle jerk going on right there in the studio!

Its too bad, because I do think Callahan has the ability to be a half-decent sport talk host. But in the same way as Shaunessey, his hatred consumes him.
