The Red Sox dropped their third in a row to the Devil Rays, this time 5-2. Among the lowlights for the Sox was Tampa’s Carl Crawford easily stealing home on Jason Johnson. NESN’s Jerry Remy deserves praise for calling the steal before it happened, and also for his criticism of Johnson afterwards, as the pitcher seemed not to care that the fastest man in baseball was chomping at the bit to come home. Johnson still stubbornly pitched out of a full windup, for which Remy was all over him.

The Bruins introduced free agent prize Zdeno Chara to the Boston media yesterday and the 6-9 defenseman looked like he should be playing power forward for the Celtics instead of lacing on skates for the Bruins. Nancy Marrapese-Burrell reports on what Chara had to say upon his arrival in Boston. Stephen Harris has Chara hoping to lead the Bruins by example and bring them back to the playoffs. Douglas Flynn notes that Chara can contribute in all phases of the game for his new club. Mick Colageo also has a good look at Chara, noting that the “Z” man looks to be a perfect fit and a throwback for the Bruins. Bud Barth has more on the dazzling start to the Peter Chiarelli era in Boston. Harris’ notebook has interim GM Jeff Gorton confirming that the Bruins do have interest in bringing former Red Wing Brendan Shanahan to Boston. Colageo’s notebook has Gorton enjoying his time as boss until Chiarelli comes in to take over the position next week.

Shira Springer reports on Al Jefferson, who says he has lost 14 lbs this offseason, and currently has a 11.1 percentage of body fat. The third year forward hopes that the extra conditioning will help him to keep his ankle healthy and make him more mobile in the post. Mark Murphy has Jefferson giving his stamp of approval to the moves that Danny Ainge made on draft night. Buddy Thomas believes that Ainge is working on making his masterstroke move as Celtics boss – a trade for either Allen Iverson or Kevin Garnett. He thinks this should happen shortly after teams can actually sign free agents on July 12th. Murphy’s notebook has Sebastian Telfair already excited about his new teammates.

The Patriots appear to have a need at wide receiver. They might be hoping that Bam Childress is ready to step up to a bigger role. Patriots Football Weekly has a look at the young wideout, who might have an advantage because he’s already got a full season in with the Patriots system.
