See the bottom of this post for another Burn Notice comment contest.

Brad Penny gave up three home runs last night, and the Red Sox offense couldn’t get the key hit when needed, resulting in a 6-4 loss to the Tampa Rays last night.

Adam Kilgore has the Sox dropping 2 1/2 games behind the Yankees with the loss. John Tomase has the Sox with another flop at the Trop. Daniel Barbarisi has the Rays completing the two game sweep of the Sox.

Tony Massarotti says we should all be very very afraid. Michael Silverman has the Sox signing Paul Byrd to a minor league deal to bolster their pitching depth. Barbarisi wonders if it is the venue, or the opponent that makes playing in Tampa so tough. Lenny Megliola says that tonight it is John Smoltz’s turn to reward the Red Sox investment and faith in him.

Nick Cafardo says the Yankees are going to be pumped up for this series. Steve Buckley says Yankees fans should think before they boo David Ortiz. Dom Amore has the Yankees owning the lead, but the Sox owning the season series thus far.

Kilgore has Daisuke Matsuzaka speaking with the media (in English) for the first time since his critical comments about the organization went public last week. Silverman has Dice-K talking a different tune this time. Barbarisi thinks that Matsuzaka speaking in English may signal a new commitment to the Sox.

Kilgore has Jason Bay re-aggravating his hamstring injury last night. Barbarisi says that Bay will miss at least two games in the Yankee series because of the injury. Tomase has Ortiz still seeking answers on his test. Buddy Thomas says that old-time baseball players were much tougher than the modern day variety.

Confidence is just oozing down in New York as the Yankees and their fans smell blood in the Red Sox waters. Check NYYankeeslinks.com for all the coverage. (NY Newsday’s feeds broke when they re-designed their site last month, and they hasn’t fixed them yet.)

The Globe notebook has David Ortiz not yet ready to speak on his test, and the players union not willing to make a legal fight to reveal his test. Tomase’s notebook says that Bay will be out for at least the first two games of the Yankees series. Barbarisi’s Red Sox journal has more on Ortiz’s quest for information.

Patriots

Over on Patriots Daily, check out Jeremy Gottlieb’s  post on five Patriots with something to prove this season.

Mike Reiss has NFL Officials in camp yesterday in part to help explain what some are calling “the Tom Brady Rule.” Ian R. Rapoport talks to a few of the rookies as they settle into camp routine. Mark Farinella has Stephen Gostkowski settled in quite nicely as Adam Vinatieri’s replacement here.

Ben Collins has a look at ex-Nebraska star Terrence Nunn, who is opening eyes in camp by catching everything thrown his way. Shalise Manza Young has Nunn making quite an impression in the early going. Hector Longo gives us his impressions of the first week of training camp.

Brian MacPherson has Terrance Wheatley set to be a playmaker this season. Rapoport has Andrew Walter not looking back at his time in Oakland.  Andy Vogt has Walter getting a fresh start with the Patriots. Robert Lee has Darius Butler getting his NFL education at the hands of the Patriots receiving stars.

Jennifer Toland has Worcester resident and eighth grade math teacher Paul King Jr. entering his first season as an NFL official. Rapoport has more on the new rules for this season.

The Globe notebook has Andrew Walter not wishing to talk about his days with the Raiders. Vogt’s notebook has more on Nunn. Rapoport’s notebook has Belichick saying that many of those not practicing are close to returning. Farinella’s notebook has Walter going from the NFL’s outhouse to penthouse. Young’s Patriots journal has Walter grateful for a shot with the Patriots. Toland’s notebook has Walter happy to be with a winner.

Mark Murphy has Glen Davis expressing his frustration with the Celtics via Twitter.

  1. Me too. It’s still got it. (Has it really only been three seasons?)

Bad thing is how seasons get split apart on all the good shows nowadays.

    Ah well….

  2. It’s easily one of the best shows on television. Great cast, can’t go wrong with Bruce Campbell.

  3. (If Michael was a baseball analyst) People forget that in baseball, it’s easy to overthink things. Like pitch counts for example. Sometimes, you just need to wait for your opponent to limit themselves by pulling someone like Jaba early. That leaves you open to strike back on lousy middle relief.

  5. Agreed with the above statement about Bruce Campbell, this is his best TV work since “The Adventures of Brisco County Jr.!”

  6. If I can tear you all away from Burn Notice – has WEEI changed its advertising routine? D & H was a little disorienting today because they had 10 minute blocks of talk and about 2 minutes(!) of commercial break. Maybe they figured out that 10 – 15 minutes of ads is driving people nuts (and maybe to another station!)

    1. Thanks for this post Evan, I was just about to mention the same thing. I wonder if they’re shortening the commercial blocks to avoid having people a week from now switch over to check out 98.5 the SportsHub.

And did Bruce just post something on the Forum page about EEI going off the air today during D&H?

      1. Wierd they are now featuring “Back in 90” outros when they go to break – no flashes -or at least no “interactive” stuff – this has to be someting to gear up for the Hub. DeOssie joked about not having time to pee and both he and Meter cracked wondering how Mikey was gonna adust.

Gotta be Hub related – I know I usually hit 890 for 15 minutes at the top of every hour and during the eternal ad breaks.

        1. I know the stream was out during a good portion of D&H as it was switched to Fox national programming – same thing happens during Sox broadcasts. Very strange day and Ordway cant stop talking about the new “short breaks”. Yet another move to counteract a competitor that they will only mock if they reference at all on air yet has driven several changes.

  7. EEI has definitely changed their ad time. Question is whether it’s for good.

Love Burn Notice on USA. Going on trip to NYC tonight, but I plan to watch finale when I return on Monday.

  10. This is by far my fave cable show.

I actually started watching it for Bruce Campbell but it’s such a really well written show with a quality that has been remarkably consistent (except for Fiona losing her accent after the pilot which IMHO was a good thing).

    Like

    1. her losing the accent was within the show. She is a british woman playing an Irish woman living in Miami. Better to do the bland american accent she has than a cheesy Irish one.

within the show they alluded to it being better for her to blend in by not using her Irish accent.
