Talkers Magazine released it’s annual top 100 sports radio shows this week, and five shows from 98.5 and WEEI made the list.
Mike Francesa is listed as the top show in the country.

Here are the Boston entries:

  1. Not sure about the credibility of Talkers Magazine. Have heard just having dead air gets you a 25 rating as long as you subscribe.

  4. It should probably be noted that this list is supposedly of the “most important” hosts/shows, not necessarily the best ones. Though thinking that Felger and Mazz could hypothetically be that important depresses me much more than a publication thinking they’re the 6th best.

  5. Mike Francesa comes in at #1..this is the guy that fell asleep on the air. Some say it was his best work.

    1. The sad thing is that he nets like 1.8m listeners daily, almost 2x-ing Kay on ESPN (only local competition).

      That had to be his “Francesa of the year” but if you follow
      @awfulannouncing or @wfanaudio – they have a ton more on absurd/silly
      things he’s done.

      I get the veteran status but is Francesa really the best NY can do?

      1. I have to tell you: the moments when he’s cranky or tired aside, nobody does a better job running a show for 5 hours a day than Francesa. I’m obviously not an NY sports fan and he at least opens up his show to doing segments on nationally-oriented topics without turning it into ESPN radio. He has a good pulse on what’s going on inside and outside the market and delegates portions of his show to that — not necessarily talking about every trivial aspect of the Knicks or Mets just because he’s sitting in New York. It’s why I often turn him on instead of Boston programming, which fixates on certain local topics not just for minutes but hours at a time (F+M most obviously) regardless of how significant they actually are… not to mention seldom, if ever, talks about something not related to Boston sports.

        As much flack as he takes — some of it warranted — he’ll still be missed when he’s gone.

        1. I always wondered if his appeal, beyond brand and legacy (he’s been on for 25 years, right?) is what you mentioned: the “ESPNization” factor that he lacks. When I sampled Kay and talked with big NY sports fans who consume radio a few times a week, if not daily, this was one of the big draws, with all admitting the “flaws” we mock Francesa for.

          Looking back, my “best they can do” was short sighted. Maybe I’d appreciate him more if I was there, listened regularly, and had an interest in the events there (outside of the teams being bad) where I wanted to tune-in. But, even without this, I still agree on your “he will be missed” comment due to how long he’s been doing it and still good. Even Larry King, at the end, lose an audience.

        2. yeah..I admit posting the clip of him falling asleep was a bit of a cheapshot (some of it aimed at Talkers Magazine)…I have listened to him from time to time. Not a lot, but from what I’ve heard he’s pretty rational. Stays away from the silly crap (which is 99% of Boston sports talk).

  6. Jonnie Dennis looks like an undertaker. Happily, he’ll waddle over here and ‘take great offense’ at that characterization. He’ll probably get my phone number and scream at me. As for these ‘awards,’ it’s like the local Emmy Awards…media hacks backslapping other media hacks.

    2. Yeah, almost all industry awards, it’s like the trophy issued now where every kid gets one for just showing up. (Credit to bullock below for the analogy.)

      Plus, I get the “top 100” but isn’t there only about 200-300 “shows” in total that you could chose from? (Obviously, you don’t count the amateur stuff.)

  8. ESPN continues to get left with garbage for MNF matchups, even with the “interesting” nature of the game last night. However, I think they were rewarded with a Dolphins loss, as it allows them to continue the Martin/Incognito stuff. I’ve paid no attention after I saw the thing blow up because I figured it’d be a bit before we knew what actually happened. Anyone else sick of it?
