Shortly after Aaron Hernandez was arrested this morning, the Patriots announced that they had released the tight end, ending his three-year tenure with the club.

They ended the announcement of the release saying that they believed it was “simply the right thing to do.”

The decisive action could mean that the team also knows that this is about to get a whole lot worse.

What a mess.  At least now he is “former” New England Patriot Aaron Hernandez. This robs sports radio of at least one storyline – “Why haven’t they released him yet???”

There will still be a lot of noise around this team when camp begins a month from now, and it will continue. They’ve always been able to shut out the noise. This might be the ultimate test in that regard.

  1. Is Greg Bedard still standing by his “Hernandez, behind the tattooed and pierced exterior, is a kind, mild-mannered person with a heart of gold” story from last year now that he’s been charged with first-degree murder for a gangland style execution?

    He seemed to still be of that opinion as of late last week when he did an interview on WEEI. Not sure if he actually still believed it or was just being stubborn, but he was willing to cut Hernandez a whole lot off slack–more than anyone else I’ve heard in the media–even as evidence to the contrary continued to pile up against him. Wish they could have explored the conversation further once Minihane tried to pressing him on it, but Bedard became defensive, it got a little uncomfortable, and they moved on pretty quickly after that.

    I understand Bedard sticking to his on-field opinion that the Hernandez extension seemed like a smart move at the time, but I don’t understand why he seemed willing to maintain the “heart of gold” character assessment. I don’t care if Hernandez donated $50k to the Myra Kraft foundation, that doesn’t soften my perception of him whatsoever if he’s in any way involved in a murder plot. I want him off my streets, forget about off my football team. It was disappointing coming from a guy I’ve grown to respect like Bedard. Unfortunately EEI decided not to post the audio to their site, otherwise I would have included a link to the interview.

In other news, Felger is having a hard time understanding why the Patriots cut Hernandez so prematurely without knowing all the facts, especially since the DA couldn’t put the murder weapon in Hernandez’s hand. Thinks they could have held onto him a few more weeks until more facts are known, and wouldn’t receive that much heat from the fans & media. Really??? You KNOW he’d be skewering Belichick & Kraft had the Pats not cut him. Felger wants to have his cake and eat it too. It’s pretty sad when Mazz is coming across as the voice of reason this afternoon.

  3. Great show on CSNNE last night with Ron Borges the featured (and only) guest and he and Felger lapping it up. To remember the days when Felger used to challenge Borges…now he’s just as bad as he is. Pathetic.

    1. The way they implied the Patriots should have known about Hernandez was so irritating. Borges said something like well they have a security staff, I guess they didn’t know. And Felger nods approvingly. I just turned it off. Isn’t this the same Felger who was all over the Red Sox when they supposedly had private investigators checking out Carl Crawford? Saying no MLB star would want to come to Boston if they are going to be investigated. He is such a fraud.
      And while we’re on the subject of how come the Patriots didn’t know about this, why is it that every reporter in town missed this? I’m sorry, but unless you had Hernandez pegged as a playmaker, but a troublemaker from day one, you don’t get to now question the Patriots. No one saw this coming.

I know we are talking MURDER here…but still say the ultimate test for “ignoring the noise” was “spygate” and they passed that test (I know,I know, they lost the Super Bowl)….but if you think back to the media hysterics over “spygate”….Pats will succeed or fail this year due to their play on the field…it won’t have anything to do with “distractions”
