The Red Sox and Tigers engaged in a bench clearing brawl last night, which ended with Kevin Youkilis getting tossed from the game after charging the mound following a fastball in his back by Tigers pitcher Rick Porcello. Enter Mike Lowell. The Red Sox third baseman had started the night on the bench but came in after Youkilis’ ejection and hit a pair of home runs in a 7-5 Red Sox victory.

John Tomase has Lowell making the most of his opportunity last night. Daniel Barbarisi has Junichi Tazawa rebounding after a rocky first inning. Paul Doyle has the brawl giving Lowell a chance. Bill Ballou has the fight triggering the Red Sox offense.

Dan Shaughnessy notes that things picked up for the Sox following the brawl, and suggests Youkilis could be a fit at outside linebacker for the Patriots. Sean McAdam has Youkilis saying that he needed to protect himself. Bill Burt has Youkilis fighting back. Mike Fine says that Youkilis and the Sox just weren’t going to take it anymore.

McAdam has Junichi Tazawa settling down after a rough start to pick up his first major league win. Ken Lechtanski says that Lowell’s hot bat gives Terry Francona some tough decisions to make. Alex Speier has Lowell making his case for more playing time.

Joe Haggerty notes that it has been open season on the basepaths for opposing runners all year against the Red Sox. Joe McDonald says that a fight can spark a struggling team.

John Connolly has Lou Merloni prepping for tomorrow night’s Oldtime Baseball Game. McDonald has Tim Wakfield prepping for a rehab start for the PawSox on Saturday. Burt has Jason Bay showing signs of life at the plate.

Lenny Megliola has a number of thoughts, starting off with Dice-K.

  1. I don’t know what Shank was looking at….looks to me like Youk got hip tossed by the skinny Tiger pitcher….Baseball fights are HYSTERICAL, they fight like girls (no offence meant to women)

  2. Does anyone know if the SportsHub radio station has a website and will it be available to stream starting tomorrow? It doesn’t seem like they are doing a good job to advertise the new station.

  3. Anyone done this? – I’m thinking of dressing my sandwich like Porcello before beating it senseless. I think its guaranteed to be picked to air during a Sox game on NESN.

  4. thesportshub is a joke….no website, no press release, no update on their twitter to tell us what the deal is…and it starts tomorrow! whoever is in charge is doing an awful job so far..
