Butch Stearns has been a FOX25 mainstay since 1999. He likes to tease viewers into tuning in for his sports segments on the newscast, often throwing out outrageous claims or hints which turn out to be something minor. He’s also a WEEI regular, noting that the income from that side gig allowed him to build an addition to his house.

Prior to FOX25, Stearns was the host of “68 SportsNight” on WABU, and before that worked in a variety of sportscasting jobs in Minnesota and Detroit, and other freelance work.

Since 1987, Butch and his family have managed the Arthur F. Stearns Memorial Fund, an organization which donates money to disabled children from Braintree in the name of Butch’s father, Artie Stearns.

  1. Absolutely the worst! From fabricating stories to incorrect “insider” information, this guy is a hack’s hack. Without a doubt, the worst person to be heard on WEEI. If I hear he is on, the station is switched immediately. The guy single-handedly alienated every major Boston sports figure for the last 10+/- years – see Nomar, Pedro, Schilling, etc…

    I have never liked him but when I saw him take a ‘puff’ of Julio Lugo’s cigar at one of the post victory celebrations last year, I almost vomited.

  7. There worst that Boston sportscasting has to offer. Not a good newsman, not good at analysis, not even very good at listening to anyone else in the conversation.

    Seems like a nice guy, but he is not very good at his job. At all. My biggest pet peeve is when Butchie says something outlandish, then adds that he was “just throwing it out there.” Boston would live to throw Butch himself out.

  9. With Butch, I can’t figure out how much is schtick and how much of it he actually believes. I can tell you, though, that when I hear him on WEEI, I’m flipping to Felger, and better yet, I’m sticking out the commercials on ESPN Radio rather than flip back to EEI. I’ve got enough stress in my day than to get all worked up listening to Stearns say something with not a hint of research behind his opinion.

  11. If there is a ‘less-than-zero’ sports media hack out there, it’s Stearns. How someone can be so haughty and elite while being flat-out WRONG about things defies logic, but that sums up Mister Stearns. I don’t think he could even make a good Wal-Mart door greeter because he’d have that wise-ass snarl and a smart comment for every shopper.

  16. This guy is an embarassment to the city of Boston and its sports fans. Butchie would not cut it in any other city in America; I have never understood how his act works here. He knows NOTHING about sports outside Rt 128.

He’s a microcosm of everything that is wrong with Sports Media today – News that lacks facts and accuracy; Features/Produced Segments that are informative and often pasted together from past uninformative features; Blogs that don’t have a consistent voice; Radio that lacks original thought and does nothing to advance a topic beyond what’s already been reitirated 1000 times. Underlying everything he does is self-promotion and a generally lack of intelligence that prevents him to create any quality work. Just because today’s market coincidentally always someone like this to succeed, doesn’t mean he should wear all these traits as a badge of honor. He does seem like he’s a nice guy though.

I was about to say that his blog usually has the sentence structure of a 3rd grader. But most third graders don’t argue with themselves in their writing and they use punctuation correctly. It could be Dangerous but I disapprove.

  23. Where did the 11% positive come from?
    Both of TV and on radio, Stearns comes across as extremely full of himself and I can’t figure out why. He’s a barely competent news reader, and any “value-added” in the way of opinion, knowledge, or commentary is resoundingly negative because he’s misinformed and insistent on every point. On radio, it’s like listening to an 8-year old. He generates headshaking opinions as a way to generating controversy and attracting attention to himself the same way kids wear underwear on their heads. When he is finally forced to recognize that his hypotheses have no basis in facts or reality, he defends himself by claiming he’s “thinking outside the box.” In all my exposure to him, he has no sense of humor about himself. In short, he sucks.

When i was a kid I loved Harley’s for the roar an the looks… but I remember this saying “PAINT & CROME DONT GET YOU HOME!” they were not very reliable back then….You could say the same about messager board posters and bloggers are like those undependable choppers in the late 60’s an early 70’s these two are just like those H.O.G.S….you two are not very good at talking about sports….I wouldn’t let you go into a lockerroom or a press box to get the scoop on sports information or talk to players.     Actually, I am very certain that I disapprove. He is the classic example of a guy who spends time reporting on sports and talking to pro athletes that he starts to talk and act like he is one himself. Listening to him on radio is brutal especially when he acts as if he has to dumb things down for the audience because he is such an insider.

    I rarely if ever watch FOX 25 so I can avoid him for the most part, but his stints on EEI force me to change the station

  33. I really, really, really don’t think that Mr. Stearns is all that bright a guy, and I don’t think his level of sports knowledge is nearly keen enough for a market like Boston.

    His, “Plagiarism? I’m not so sure about that” statement about Ron Borges last year is an all-timer….one for the history books. On WEEI in particular, he’s said some other really dumb things, especially when it comes to football matters. That seems to be sport about which he knows very, very little.

    Butch seems to be getting by on his “nice guy” image, which I’m sure is very well deserved. It’s just not the ONLY requirement for holding such a high-profile media position in a sports town like Boston.

  41. What what WHAT? I’m not trying to deny his freedom of speech, just commenting on the results when he excercises it. What clause in the constitution mentions the saturday afternoon shift on WEEI? The purpose of these excercises is to gauge public opinion on public figures. I think Butch Stearns is not good at what he does. You disagree (I think- I ran your post through Babelfish and it told me to perform an anatomically impossible act) which is fine. But don’t try to paint a “disapprove” vote as me (or anyone else) wishing harm upon Stearns or trying to deny his right to express himself, ham-fisted as it may be

  42. I believe we belong in the Garden Of Eden, not in a jungle of concrete and asphalt and city noises and rush, rush, rush! to the next signal light. I also like peanut butter, I’d wager that you DON’T. I also believe Butch HAS THE RIGHT to put that edition on his house….It’s best to shake hands and move on. However while you move on to the next traffic light, I’ll be spending alot of time walking the ridges through Wick-QuaBoag Valley……an enjoying the wild life that uses my yard as a pathway to their stars the 1,000 ft ridge.
