Andy Gresh co-hosts the 98.5 FM midday show Gresh & Zo.

A former college football player at URI, Gresh has been a fixture on the Patriots radio network’s pre and postgame coverage for much of the last decade. Prior to taking over for Gary Tanguay on the 98.5 midday show, Gresh had worked at SIRIUS/XM radio where he hosted The Gresh Show. Before that he had hosted The Andy Gresh Show weekends on ESPN Radio.

Gresh and co-host Scott Zolak also hosted a show on the former Providence sports radio station The Score, WSKO. He makes many appearances on Comcast SportsNet year-round, but especially during the NFL season.

Gresh has also worked college football telecasts for NESN, including the annual Williams/Amherst rivalry matchup.

  2. With Gary Tanguay's help he managed to ruin a very listenable pre-game show.

Played at URI but doesn't like to burden people about tales from his playing days.

  3. The thing that should most embarrass the folks at Entercom is that a show with Andy Gresh is beating them in the ratings. A host that failed in Providence, failed on Satellite, failed at Division 1-AA, football, and failed as a weekend night manager at Domino's. Is a vomitous personality both on the air and on twitter. Uses the same bowl for his haircuts and that he uses during his long commutes to work.

Too much jaw jackin', not enough synapsin'. DISAPPROVE!

  6. I don’t know what this man does well. He has a grating personality, is devoid of wit, rarely says anything that I didn’t already know, and when he shares an opinion I can only mutter to myself about how little I care about what he thinks. The fact that his midday show is unlistenable does not bother me so much as what he has done the once very enjoyable WBCN/98.5 Patriots broadcasts. It is an easy choice to avoid his midday show, but it takes more effort to avoid this blowhard on game days when he puzzlingly dominates the conversation on the 98.5 pregame/postgame/halftime shows. Can’t someone pull this jack*ss aside and tell him to shut up for a moment?

Gresh is the fat obnoxious drunk guy that you find yourself stuck next to at the bar that does not have the good sense to know when to stop talking. You can move to the other side of the bar, but you can’t escape the sound of his voice. I don’t understand how such a dislikable radio personality with so little insight into the topics he covers could get a job in broadcasting in the first place.

In case I was not clear or direct enough, I voted disapprove.

    1. Well said, Andrew. To attempt to answer your question regarding how he manages to land one broadcasting job after another, my guess is that he ‘eats hours’, sort of the way it’s been said for many years that Tim Wakefield adds value to a pitching staff because he eats innings. Station management knows that even if no one calls in to Gresh’s show there will at least never be any dead air, except for the air he destroys with his ear-grating voice.

Do we even want to get into the utter lack of professionalism he displays in the world of social media? Say what you want about Ellsbury’s 2010 season, but for Gresh to remark about it on twitter using tasteless language is completely reprehensible.

      1. Jason, first of all, good job on Chad Finn's chat. I think he answered about 25 of your questions. as far as Gresh goes:

        1) It all went downhill when he was working weekends at 98.5 and decided to blab for four hours on Tiger Woods.

        2) He has also taken the mature route with his debate with Montreal's Tony Marinaro by calling him "vag boy".

        3) He believed it was fine for Miami Dolphin, GM, Jeff Ireland to ask Cowboy WR Dez Bryant if his mother is a prostitute.

        4) Finally he was wrong in every way, shape and form when it came to talking about the Bruins.

He has been an unmitigated disaster. I agree with Finn when he believes Mut and Lou will eventually get even with Gresh and Zo. I know there are a lot of critics of Mut and Lou but eventually people will listen to them and then listen more to Gresh and Zo and wonder why in the world they would Gresh five minutes of their time.

  7. Disapprove. Just the pitch and sound of his much too loud voice is nauseating – and then you have to listen to what comes out of his mouth. Speaking of Gresh's mouth, his would look good with an apple in it.

  8. Is this picture from actual promotional material or from random Facebook picture? I can't imagine going to a photo shoot wearing a Smurf shirt that accentuates features that one might want to downplay. Anyway, I'm glad he's got a paying gig with health insurance because the annual mammograms he clearly needs aren't going to pay for themselves. Disapprove!

  9. His voice is so grating I simply can't listen to it – keeps reminding me of chalk scraped on a blackboard. I'd force myself to if he had something worthwhile to say, but that's not the case either. I can't figure out how any radio executive could think he'd pull in new listeners. The best 98.5 can hope for is that he doesn't lose too many for the station. Granted his competition is bad too – for other reasons. But what a lost opportunity to build up this time-slot! I used to switch back-and-forth between eei and 98.5 mid-day, and now I can't listen to either station then. Saves me time-:) I tune back for Mazz/Felger.

  12. I don't know what is more annoying, Zolak having the need to contantly tell us how he was a backup QB in the NFL or hearing Gresh talk about how he played Division1aa football at that great football institution, URI.
Their high radio ratings and low approval rates make me question the way radio ratings are determined.

  17. As a former 790 The Score listener in Rhode Island, I was amazed that everyone that I spoke with could not stand him and he still remained on the air. I am still amazed that he remains on the air devoid of any discernible talent. I agree that he totally ruins the Patriots pre and post game shows, and I cannot listen to either. Are you listening Patriots?

  18. Wow, a lot of negativity here about Gresh. I want to say something nice to balance it out. How about this? He's only the second dumbest host on his show. He's also not as easily distracted by shiny objects, and as far as I know, has never broken someone's neck by jumping on their head from an Everclear stage. Other than that, he sucks.

  19. He thinks we all hate him because he doesn't kiss the Patriots ass. Nope. That's not it. We hate him because he really, really, really sucks. And is painful to listen to. Please, Patriots, for the LOVE OF GOD, get rid of him.

  20. He doesn't embarass easily, does he? Along with Felger, he embodies everything that's bad with talk radio. It's incredible he can make a living doing this. The fact that he can make a living is proof positive that the United States is the greatest nation on earth.

  21. I can actually write something positive even though I disapprove of Gresh. When he first came on 98.5, he broadcasted solo on the weekends and it was OK. When paired with Zolak, he dumbed it down.

  22. The fact that Gresh is gainfully employed and Sheppard is a pro-am poker player with a ham radio internet gig only goes to show how arbitrary life can be. If you told me that their career paths were the result of a 'Trading Places' style bet between the management of WEEI and the Sportshub, I would totally believe that. Neither has any discernible talents away from buffet destruction.

  23. A daily version of Planes Trains and Automobiles without that film's subtlety and wit. For 98.5, I'd assume that his value is in gnawing at his doggie toy (eg. Ellsbury's absence 2010, Brady, etc.) is so tenacious that it makes the act following him – Felger – appear fair, reasonable and balanced in comparison.

  25. To me Gresh is the only on air personality that hasn’t sold out. Point in reference was the Tony Marinaro conversation . Gresh probably knew he would sound like a reckless American broadcaster but he still went ahead and said his piece … a couple of things we were all thinking. Is humor is sophomoric and males one tomany wrestling comments for a grown man, but Gresh is Gresh a true original

    1. So let me see if I understand your point. An on air media personality gets your vote of approval because he calls another media professional "Vagboy" or something similarly vulgar because his lack of mastery of the English language precluded him from using or thinking of a more professional word. Furthermore you look at this as being slightly sop****ric which in turn you applaud because it shows that even though Gresh has been in radio close to 20 years now he has not grown, developed more professional skills, and outgrown his 5th grade year.

For the record, that exchange with Marinaro should have gotten him fired, especially as it came less than a year after the things he said about Ellsbury. These aren't things to be applauded. They aren't funny, at least not in the 10-2 spot on a sportsradio talk show. If he said it on Stern or O & A…maybe I might give him a pass…but in a forum that is not a comedy show but pretends to be a serious sports talk show…he should be, and more importantly his bosses should demand that he is, more professional.

    2. Actually, I was not thinking the same way as Gresh, thank god. He proved he was completely clueless arguing about hockey, when he started to get pummeled by Marinaro, Gresh thought that name calling was the best way for him to win a debate. I think there are five year olds who act with more intelligence than Gresh. Felger and Maz had Marinaro in studio for game seven against Montreal and it was good and entertaining talk. You know Gresh is bad when F&M are getting high praise over him.

  28. Your providing a disservice to Sheppard by the comparisons. Sheppard had a clue about sports, a small clue, but a clue. Gresh thinks he's a football expert because he played at URI and somehow got Krafty Bob to think he'd be good on the pre-game.

For the other sports he has zero knowledge. He's from the Fat John Dennis and Felger school of taking one play and making the player the anti-christ.

Funny part is Napeolean Wolf thought putting a flash geek and bench warmer against him was a good idea.

    Whole heartly disapprove.

  31. THE WORST. I've stopped listening when the mid-day show comes on (I usually have the radio on in my office) simply because Gresh is a ma-roon. I can take Zo most of the time, but Gresh just seems like a miserable prick who thinks he is better than his callers, better than this market. He talks about his time in NYC as if he's a big wheel, talks about playing football in high school and college as if that gives him legitimacy. I get the sense, too, that he is actually dumb and has never read a book. Say what you will about Felger and his negative, bomb-throwing radio persona, but at least he's got a brain and some sense of wit. Why does a market like Boston have to put up with Gresh? Beyond me.

I find him condescending to listeners, without vocal range (maybe he's deaf & has to hollar to hear himself?) & without wit or insight. Also I've gotten the impression from occasional remarks heard on other programs, that he enjoys being a bully to anyone who can't outshout him & doesn't outweigh him. i usually tune in to news/traffic & weather during that time frame. But I believe I could take Zolac if he were paired with someone else. I have enjoyed his post-lockout football takes & have sucked it up enough to tolerate larda$$ long enough to listen recently.

This guy is a ferocious meathead, please SportsHub execs pull him off the roster, and for God's sake don't let him infiltrate the Patriots' game broadcast the way he has lately. He renders anything he touches unbearable. He has no original thinking, repeats himself endlessly, loves the sound of his own voice, and sounds worse than a set of untuned bagpipes. I'm begging you, can him, look at his negatives, don't let him drag a quality station down the plumbing. Please? Please????
